Concentration systems

GENERAL EXPLANATION
MORE INFO

Concentration was already being spoken about in the 1970s. At the same time, GaAs (gallium arsenide) solar cells were improving technologically and increasing their efficiency. Shortly after, trials were initiated for solutions based on these cells working at high light concentration levels. These optical solutions directly affect the design of the photovoltaic module, since, depending on the optics being used, it completely changes the concept and even the commercial and industrial viability of the product. This is based on two aspects:

1) The level of light concentration on the receiver (solar cell), whereby our aim of 1000 suns makes it possible to drastically reduce costs for production from 10 MW.
2) The compactness of the adopted solution. The TIR-R optical system solution, based on refraction and total internal reflection, allows for photovoltaic modules of the same thickness as the conventional ones, while Fresnel optics achieve less concentration and give thicker modules, as well as being less cost-effective.

Three different parts can be distinguished in this new photovoltaic module
  - Solar cells: these are based on semiconductor materials different from conventional silicon, made up of elements from groups III and V of the periodic table - Gallium Arsenide (GaAs), etc. It is highly efficient in concentration and has great potential for exploiting the solar spectrum.

- Optical system: This consists of two lenses and is based on non-image-forming optics. The lens attached to the cell is called SOE, while the one installed at a certain distance from it - about 18 mm - is called POE. This cell is attached to the front glass that forms part of the module structure. These lenses, with their innovative design, are manufactured using the plastic-injection moulding technology able to guarantee the optical quality of the parts that it produces. This system is very attractive to all fitters.

- Phase of assembly of the equipment on a substrate or panel: this panel works as a mechanical support and dissipates heat well. This phase is an encapsulation and assembly procedure that is completely new to Photovoltaics.
